Janberry
i am janberry
dropped from the night…
morphed in the light
new appetite for the WORD
from the beginning the son
knew he’d become flesh in due season
to free us for his purpose
with fodder for the righteous
disciples believing the scroll
living in and not of this world
I hanging from the tree of life
I overcome all unseen strife
as a fruit of the true vine
reborn in the Divine
I’m set free
I am janberry…

Who am I?
My name is Janessa Mc Kell a.k.a. Janberry and I am a spoken word poet, born and raised in the Caribbean island republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Writing since the age of thirteen, I can distinctly remember the Christmas I received the book, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. Falling in love with the very alive words of Maya Angelou’s poem, “Phenomenal Woman”, I challenged myself to mold words the way she did. It became a passion for ‘word’…then spoken ‘word’….and recently ‘word’ over music…
The moniker, ‘Janberry’ came about in 2006 after a life changing event that still affects me today…read about or listen to this story in the Book/CD: Godcall.
Why did I write a book?
At first I considered writing an actual book but I believe my attention span is too short for such an endeavour…and poems come more naturally.
We all have such lovely stories, I decided to share mine. I’ve done so, in two forms (well three if you are one of those who don’t consider that words are music to the ears) : written and spoken.
